Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport's long-standing inability to attract competitively priced service has preconditioned many travelers. They drive by "AVP" to airports in the Lehigh Valley, Philadelphia, New Jersey and New York.

The local airport has gotten some traction recently in improving service, however. New daily flights to Chicago by American Airlines and a second daily flight to the USAirways hub at Charlotte, N.C. offer easy global connections.

Obviously, whether the service sticks depends mostly on whether people use it. The Marcellus Shale natural gas boom has created a market for business travelers to destinations in the south and west where most of the drilling companies have their headquarters.

Greater use of the local airport would have short-term and long-term effects. Greater usage not only would preserve existing service, but attract even more service and ensure the price competition, route by route, to keep attractive fares for the long term.

Recent fare analyses by economic development groups have found many fares from the local airport to be competitive, especially when travelers factor in the time, fuel, tolls and long-term parking costs associated with using more distant airports.

As airport officials have noted, there still are service holes to fill, such as direct service to the region's single greatest leisure destination, Orlando, Fla.

By at least assessing AVP's service and fares before deciding to fly from other airports, local travelers will build a case for such service, and invest in their own convenience and the region's economic development.
