“Gonzo: Clock still ticking on Reid” |
Gonzo: Clock still ticking on Reid Posted: 05 Oct 2010 01:02 AM PDT Posted on Tue, Oct. 5, 2010 Excerpts from Monday's Ask Gonzo chat on Philly.com with columnist John Gonzalez: Gonzo: Sorry I'm late. No excuses. Time got away from me. I need to do a better job there. I take full responsibility - except the Philly.com producers started the clock sooner than I expected. But I'm not blaming anyone. I'm not here to criticize them (much). Time's yours. Comment from Stew Bradley: Maybe I am overrated after all. Gonzo: You're not overrated, but that wasn't your finest game. Lot of that yesterday. Quintin Mikell's pride probably still hurts after getting run over, and Asante Samuel missed quite a few tackles (even for him). Comment from Nostrildamus: Everything we just went through with McNabb will be re-created when [Andy] Reid leaves. National media will give him love even though he constantly comes up short. Gonzo: The national media love Reid for reasons I still don't understand. Mike Lombardi from the NFL Network is one of the few I've seen go after Big Red for mismanaging game situations and making the same mistakes over and over. At some point, you'd think the Eagles' front office would notice. Maybe in another 12 years. Comment from Quintin Mikell: What was I doing on the rollout by Donovan? I had my back to him for a few seconds. What about my horse collar? What about getting rolled over on the TD? Gonzo: You need to put in a call to Brian Dawkins, pronto. You haven't been the same player since he left town. Comment from Duke Fame: What do you think about Peter King naming Donovan the NFL offensive player of the week? Why is the national media so enamored with this guy? Gonzo: It's a joke. Donovan made a couple of big plays, but on the whole he was average at best. He completed just 8 of 19 passes for 125 yards. He also threw a pretty awful pick. Not sure how that sort of performance qualifies you for player of the week. Comment from Bob C: Hey Gonzo, Not that I want to see this, but if [Michael] Vick is gone for a while and [Kevin] Kolb continues to underachieve, does this place Reid on the hot seat? Gonzo: I don't think the Eagles have even heard of the term "hot seat." They've heard "gold standard" and "best roster in the NFL" and a bunch of other nonsense, but the one you mentioned has eluded them for far too long. If a player continued to make the same mental errors Reid has made for more than a decade, he would have been booted to the curb a long time ago. Amazing that the head coach isn't accountable in the same way. Comment from Bryan: Doesn't Andy realize the "I dun goofed" Internet meme has been taken? Gonzo: The goofed bit was perfect. It captured the essence of what he's about as an in-game coach. That one sound bite will define his legacy. Comment from Rob: How do we get [Joe] Banner and Reid out of here? Gonzo: It's a waiting game, Rob. I recommend eating well and working out. See your doctor regularly. Don't drink too much and quit smoking if that's your thing. If you're lucky, you'll live to see the transition around the same time we finally colonize the moon. Comment from Charlie Manuel: Is Joe Banner out roping off the parade route for us? We'll need to run it through the Linc again this year. Gonzo: Haven't you heard? There's no running in the Linc - except by the opposing team. Comment from Matt: Who was more incompetent yesterday, the refs or the Eagles' coaching staff? Gonzo: Coaching staff incompetence > ref incompetence. Comment from USAIRWAYS: Please tell Domo and Les that we appreciate them not bashing us this week. With the game in San Fran, we should be able to provide some good copy for them. Hopefully, Domo has to change flights in Pittsburgh, Charlotte, and then Phoenix. Gonzo: Yeah, I fly you a lot, but I'm with Domo and Les. I was on a flight to Augusta when the captain said we were delayed because someone had "put the fuel in the wrong place." That actually happened. You should have the option of getting off the plane after that. Putting the fuel in the right place seems pretty basic. Comment from Chicago: Does anybody really know what time it is? Does anybody really care? Gonzo: Very nice. Contact columnist John Gonzalez at 215-854-2813 or gonzalez@phillynews.com.
