Robert Welch Sr., 88
World War II veteran

Robert Foster Welch Sr., 88, of West Hills Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, formerly of Sewickley, Florida and New York, died Aug. 4, 2010.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hilda (Mickey) Welch; and sons Robert F. Welch Jr. and Richard Bonn

He is survived by his children, Gloria Ann (Bill) Hendrickson, Robert S. (Renee) Welch, and Diana (Gordon) Marschner. He was father-in-law of Pat Bonn and Beverly Welch.

Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren with two more great-grandchildren on the way. 

Mr. Welch served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army 11th Airborne. 

He was a retired Credit Union director of USAir. 

He built and flew model airplanes, rebuilt his first home doubling its size, built a wooden motor boat, a camping trailer, lamps and furniture.  

A quarter-scale model of the Stinson Reliant (Gull Wing Stinson SR-10) designed and built from scratch still hangs in the USAirways Training Center in Moon Township. 

He loved camping, fishing, bowling, dancing and golfing.  

Mr. Welch was a lifelong member and volunteer of many organizations. He was a scout master with the Boy Scouts and Explorers, served as an officer at many levels in the Optimist Club, the 11th Airborne, and was an active member of the US Air Credit Union for many years. 

He was lifelong blood donor. He continued to be active throughout his 80s, volunteering each week for several local nursing homes in the Pittsburgh area.  

A memorial service is scheduled for Aug. 21, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 616 Washington St., Sewickley.

Patricia Small, 72
Active in Sewickley community

Patricia Ann Webb Small, 72, of Sewickley, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2010. 

She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William H. Webb. 

Born Oct. 11, 1937, at Magee Women's Hospital in Oakland, Mrs. Small spent her early childhood in Mt. Lebanon on Hoodridge Lane. The family later moved to Rolling Hills Farm in Sewickley Heights. She attended The Ellis School, The Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr and graduated from University of Michigan with a bachelor's degree in music performance (piano). 

After living for almost two decades in Gainesville, Fla., where she raised her family, and later in Sarasota, Fla., on St. Simon's Island, Ga., Mrs. Small returned to Sewickley in 1992 to enjoy her active retirement in her childhood home.

Mrs. Small's professional career culminated when she became the assistant deputy director for the Jobs Training Partnership Agency in Brunswick, Ga. Before that post, she held financial officer positions with similar organizations in Gainesville and Sarasota, as well as the Gainesville Older Americans Council. She also taught music at the First Presbyterian Church, Gainesville, and served as a den mother for Cub Scout Pack 456 at Myra Terwilliger School, Gainesville.

Mrs. Small was a member of The Presbyterian Church, Sewickley. She was a member of Session and of several other church committees, including chairing the Worship and Music Committee and serving on the Organ Committee. She rang and sang in the church's adult bell and vocal choirs.

Mrs. Small was a volunteer who was a member of the board of directors and treasurer of the Union Aid Society. She also was a treasurer of the Sewickley Valley Hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop. She provided volunteer services for and supported the Pittsburgh Opera, the Pittsburgh Symphony, Girls Hope and the Alzheimer's Foundation.

Mrs. Small was known for her lifelong love of all the Pittsburgh sports teams. She also was active in the Sewickley Music Club and the Women's Club of Sewickley. Her love of music came from her father, who played violin and was a longtime benefactor of the Pittsburgh Opera. 

She is survived by her son, Scott Samuel Small and his wife Julie, formerly of Sewickley and now residing in Wayne, Pa; her daughter, Laura Ann Small Greene of Gainesville, Fla.; three grandchildren, Maggie Greene and Virginia and Graham Small; and her brother John M. Webb and wife Mary Theresa, formerly of Sewickley Heights and now residing in Willow Street, Lancaster County.

Betty Lou Waite, 74
Former Sewickley Hills councilwoman

Betty Lou Masters Waite, 74, lifelong resident of Sewickely Hills Borough, died Aug. 4, 2010, at her home.

She was a retired nurse and former councilwoman of Sewickley Hills Borough for many years. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil E. Waite Sr. in 1983; her parents, William and Anna Masters; brother, Robert Masters; sister, Mary McCoy; and grandson Joshua Taylor.

She is survived by her children, Kathleen (Ernest) A. Taylor of Aliquippa,  Virgil E. (Barbara) Waite Jr. of Murrysville, and Carole Dawson of California, Ky.; sister, Billie (Edward) Siebke of Sewickley and Suzanne (Leroy) Brown of Ohio.

She also is survived by five grandchildren, Jason (Billi Kae) Taylor of Aliquippa, Cassandra Waite of Virginia, Candice Waite of Murraysville, Daniel and Mathew Dawson of Kentucky; and three great-grandchildren, Jonica, Jake and Janelle.

Internment is in Sewickley Cemetery.
